Both the market and the ruins of the old town are very worth visiting! The greater market is open on Sundays but other smaller and great markets are also open on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They are the best places to buy typical and original souvenirs, food, take pictures and blend with natives and other visitors. From Cusco the trip takes around 1 hour on
Turistic bus.
Pisac ruins
From the market, there are no public transportations to the ruins, so the alternatives are to walk there (2 hours), take a private tour or hire a taxi. At this point I left my group and with 2 other tourists, decided to reach the Pisac ruins.
I chose to hike up the staircase in the mountain-side, that’s roughly 600 years-old with no railing… add to that the fact that it’s a death drop off the edge… But it was worth every effort, because the ruins are a gorge!!! The remains in Pisac consist of agricultural terraces surrounding the mountain, aqueducts, and ceremonial temples. The Sun Temple reminds the temples up in Machu Picchu. Besides the already excavated ruins, there are still some more being “cleaned up” at the moment. In its time, Pisac was an entrance-fortress to the route connecting The Inca Empire and the jungle.
At the end of the day at around 5 pm, we climbed down the staircase again and went back to Pisac town, where we hired a taxi to take us back to Cusco (US$12 per person). We arrived in the Main Plaza in Cusco at 8:45 pm and each one followed to the proper hotel.
I must say I got really tired of it all… I think I need some real rest.
Sweet dreams…
