Caral – Supe
In the valley of the Supe river, 5.000 years ago, arose the oldest civilization of the Americas. Even older than the Chavin De Huantar and the Inca empires. It’s the Caral civilization: a complex of 6 pyramids, a central Plaza, amphitheatre, houses and temples, different from anything else in the world. Their lifestyle was based on trades: people from Caral cultivated – among others- cotton, with which they built fishing nets, clothes etc. Such fishing nets were traded for fish and snail fish with people living in the coast. This is just an example of this trading-system that reached as far as what is now Equador and the Amazon. They developed their own irrigation system to grow species in their agricultural terraces, they could forecast the weather using their astronomical knowledge, they could heal aches and diseases by using their medicinal-plants knowledge. Opposite the other civilizations of that time – Egyptians, Indians, Chinese – their government was not based on warfare; they kept peace based on religion. The Lost Pyramids complex of Caral is located 182 km north from Lima, and tours usually depart from Lima and last the whole day.
